To build new wind farms across the UK, government must help to come up to standard engineering jobs to start construction. A representative from the Renewable Energy Centre stated that engineering jobs would go to overseas workers unless the government guarantees UK workers have the necessary skills for the project. The spokesperson said:
"It is important that the government seizes this time to ensure the skills and workforce is in place to accommodate the expansion of the wind energy industry."
The project to build 6,400 wind turbines is the largest wind energy expansion ever which will create 70,000 civil engineer jobs UK. Also, new wind farms could help renewable energy become a significant part of the UK's supply of energy.
Mott Macdonald energy director Simon Harrison agreed there must be an increase in skills. He told New Civil Engineering recruitment that the demanded expertise in renewable energy for the project was beyond what UK companies were used to.
